In and Around Mullingar

Mullingar is a market town with a rich heritage dating back to Norman times. Its imposing Renaissance style Cathedral, with its 140 feet high twin spires, dominates the townscape.
The Ecclesiastical museum has an interesting collection dating back to Penal times, during which the catholic religion was suppressed.
Home of Joe Dolan

Singer, songwriter Joe Dolan, one of Mullingar's finest sons, has legions of fans all over the world. Sadly he passed away on December 26th 2008.
He is buried out in Walshestown Mullingar and thousands of fans visit his grave each week to pay their respects.
A statue has been placed in Mullingar's Market Square to commemorate the esteemed artist.
Other attractions and place of interest close by include Mullingar Arts Centre, Genesis Gift Gallery, Belvedere House & Gardens, the Hill of Uisneach and Lilliput Jonathan Swift Park.
Westmeath's Lakeland Scenery
The county of Westmeath is home to some delightful scenery including a number of lakes with wooded shores and rolling hills, providing many charming views. Ancient historical legends include that of Lough Derravaragh, situated to the north of the county and famous as the first of the three lakes on which the legendary children of Lir spent 300 years.
Other lakes within easy reach of Mullingar include Lough Ennell, Lough Sheelin, Lough Owl (all have boat hire available) and Lough Sheever.
The Royal Canal is also close by. All these places offer good coarse fishing, pike and trout (fishing tackle and bait shop in the town centre).
